Study: Family-Based Therapy Can Aid Those With Anorexia
WEDNESDAY, Sept. 24, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- Family-based therapies can benefit teens with the eating disorder anorexia nervosa, a new study suggests.

"The take-away message for parents is that, first, there is good treatment available for their child who is struggling with anorexia," study author Dr. Stewart Agras, professor emeritus of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University, said in a university news release.

"Second, the preferred treatment is family-based therapy in which parents help their child regain weight," Agras added. Read more at http://consumer.healthday.com/mental-health-information-25/child-psychology-news-125/study-family-based-therapy-can-aid-those-with-anorexia-692008.html#

Eating Disorders May Start in Elementary School -They're often linked with other mental health issues, researchers say

Eating Disorders May Start in Elementary School
Canadian researchers evaluated 215 children, aged 8 to 12, with eating problems. More than 15 percent of the kids made themselves vomit occasionally, and about 13 percent had bulimic-like behaviors. Fifty-two percent of the children had been hospitalized at least once due to their eating problem, and 48 percent had been received outpatient treatment, the researchers said.

Bulimia is an eating disorder characterized by eating and purging, usually by vomiting or using laxatives. Read more at http://consumer.healthday.com/mental-health-information-25/child-psychology-news-125/eating-disorders-may-start-in-elementary-school-692543.html#

Demi Lovato Gets Vocal About Mental Illness

"I was young and successful and I was looking up at the venue where I was about to play, where I would be able to live out my dreams, something I dreamed of for years, and yet I was crying in the bus," Lovato, now 22, recalled. "I was feeling empty and for some reason I was feeling hopeless, even though I had hope right in front of me."
      -------------------------------------------------------
"About 44 million adults are affected, and yet so many of them are not able to access treatment or they have not begun the process of seeking it out," said Allen Doederlein, president of the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, one of the five national mental health advocacy groups collaborating on the new initiative. "Understanding that these are serious, real conditions, but also conditions that people can and do achieve wellness within, is really what this is all about. We want to make sure people speak up and get help, and lead thriving lives because they've done so."

Acupuncture and women’s health: an overview of the role of acupuncture and its clinical management in women’s reproductive health.

Women having difficulty conceiving may want to turn to acupuncture. A recent review suggests that acupuncture treatments can support fertility and help with a range of gynecological conditions.

The narrative review, by Cochrane et al. (2014), discusses the results of more than 300 papers on acupuncture’s use in women’s health and the mechanisms by which it works to promote reproductive function. Preliminary evidence from the review supports the use of acupuncture for women with many gynecological conditions, including menstrual irregularity, menstrual pain, premenstrual syndrome, ovulatory dysfunction, and infertility.
