Study: Family-Based Therapy Can Aid Those With Anorexia -Teaching parents to help their children with eating behaviors may lead to faster weight gain, researchers say

Study: Family-Based Therapy Can Aid Those With Anorexia
WEDNESDAY, Sept. 24, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- Family-based therapies can benefit teens with the eating disorder anorexia nervosa, a new study suggests.

"The take-away message for parents is that, first, there is good treatment available for their child who is struggling with anorexia," study author Dr. Stewart Agras, professor emeritus of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University, said in a university news release.

"Second, the preferred treatment is family-based therapy in which parents help their child regain weight," Agras added. Read more at http://consumer.healthday.com/mental-health-information-25/child-psychology-news-125/study-family-based-therapy-can-aid-those-with-anorexia-692008.html#

Eating Disorders May Start in Elementary School -They're often linked with other mental health issues, researchers say

Eating Disorders May Start in Elementary School
Canadian researchers evaluated 215 children, aged 8 to 12, with eating problems. More than 15 percent of the kids made themselves vomit occasionally, and about 13 percent had bulimic-like behaviors. Fifty-two percent of the children had been hospitalized at least once due to their eating problem, and 48 percent had been received outpatient treatment, the researchers said.

Bulimia is an eating disorder characterized by eating and purging, usually by vomiting or using laxatives. Read more at http://consumer.healthday.com/mental-health-information-25/child-psychology-news-125/eating-disorders-may-start-in-elementary-school-692543.html#

      - Study links attention disorder and a form of binge-eating syndrome

FRIDAY, May 1, 2015 (HealthDay News) -- Children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have an increased risk of a certain type of eating disorder, according to a new study.

The eating disorder is called loss of control eating syndrome (LOC-ES). As the name implies, people with this disorder sometimes can't stop eating, even if they want to, according to the researchers from the Johns Hopkins Children's Center in Baltimore.

Eating disorders during adolescence may have lasting socioeconomic consequences for women

Eating disorders during adolescence may have lasting socioeconomic consequences for women

In a recent study, females with eating disorders in late adolescence were more likely to have lower levels of educational attainment and personal income in early adulthood. They were also less likely to own a home. These associations were not seen in males.

Disordered eating behaviors may set some individuals on a different trajectory whereby they do not have the same life chances or opportunities for success in adulthood

            What is bulimia nervosa?

Bulimia is a serious psychiatric illness, an eating disorder in which the person regularly binge-eats and then tries to compensate for that behavior by over-exercising and purging (by vomiting and/or using laxatives).

According to the National Library of Medicine1, a significant number of people with bulimia nervosa also have anorexia nervosa.
